Part L legislation for interior lighting has been with us since the turn of the century – and is now entering its third incarnation. The Government sees it as the most effective method for making energy savings, and subsequent CO2 reductions, from interior lighting schemes. However, some lighting design practitioners see its energy targets as misguided, ineffective and inimical to good lighting design. Does Part L’s emphasis on luminaire efficiency take into account the overall interior ambience and the visual comfort of users? And does its neglect of automated controls (such as daylight and presence sensing) miss real opportunities for substantial energy savings that don’t compromise good design? This session of ‘Joined up Lighting’ will explore these important questions.
